Heritage Corners
Russell Museum enjoys telling some of the fascinating stories from the town’s history. Over the years, our local paper Russell Lights carries regular feature articles called Heritage Corner which feature these early gems about the town and our people. Some of our earlier articles are reproduced here for information.
A selection of them have been reproduced here. When you visit Russell, look out as you may well recognise some of the places and names from our past. Scroll back to view archived stories from our past.
Alsatia – Where the law cannot reach – #155
"The country north of Auckland may be most conveniently reached by taking passage in one of the Northern Steamship Company's fine vessels which, leaving Auckland in the late afternoon, reaches early the following morning the expansive estuary of the Bay of Islands...
Names and Faces – #156
No, they are not photos of the same people thirty years apart. On the left Kathleen Williams and an unnamed friend show their style on the Russell beach c.1924 and on the right seven King siblings gather at the Russell School reunion in 1956. Many generations of both...
Once there was a mill here – #157
1858 was a year notable not only for the erection of the Maiki Hill flagstaff, Whakakotahitanga, but also for the building of a more prosaic structure. This was the year Motu Kaiaraara became known as Mill Island - probably too, the only time that the citizens of...
Four Fossils – #158
A fish, two coconuts and a rock with embedded fossilized shells. What do they have in common? Two things - they're all fossils and they've all ended up in Russell Museum's collection. Only one was found here, the fish, at Long Beach. The coconuts are from near Coopers...
Bigger, Brighter & Bolder? – #159
Most of us are familiar with our iconically historic buildings - Pompallier, Christ Church, and the old Custom House - but we still have many other less historic buildings and sites that contribute significantly to our sense of history. Some of them are NZHPT...
Thanks, Lusi – #160
The swells and waves generated by Cyclone Lusi moved the shingle on our Russell beach around and reshaped the sand banks at Long Beach. They also tossed up some surprises. This curiously shaped rock is one of them, found at the south end of Paihia beach and handed in...
To Help Us Remember – #161
Some images from Anzac Days past. Images of those who were there, standing and marching to remember those who went before them. Lest we forget. The 1950s will always be black and white. The coloured images are from 1993. Text & photos: Russell Museum, Ian...
Another Anzac Commemoration And A Different Sort Of Loss – #162
These photos are from sometime in the 1950s, before the "back road" reached Te Rawhiti. Then, a favoured way to get to Rawhiti was by boat. The service was probably much the same as now, ditto the thoughts and memories of those in attendance. What was different...
Emergency Power & People Power – #163
Power cuts. They could be worse. Does anyone remember 1973 when the whole peninsula was briefly powerless, courtesy of a visiting cruise liner? The photo shows the Chapel St generator that arrived the very same day. But that wasn't the end of it. The NZ Herald,...
